Hiking, bugs, yurts and extreme gardening

I run the business end of things here, and one of the things I focus on most is customer service. Dave and I have been at this since 2002, and in that time we’ve grown from training a couple of friends in our garage, to a 250-square-foot storage unit, to a fully-equipped gym in Ballard. We still have a mom-and-pop-shop feel, and I love that.

Our trainers have attracted all these really interesting people –the coolest clients on the planet. I’ve gotten to know a lot of them, and I love hearing their stories. I think part of our success stems from the fact that we focus on fitness first.  Functional fitness, pure and simple. Our main job is making sure our clients can physically do whatever it is they want to do, without getting hurt. I want anyone to feel welcome and comfortable working out here.

Before CrossFit Seattle, I ran a student exchange program at the University of Washington, which involved managing a tight budget and lots of moving parts. I also spent a year working with CrossFit headquarters, managing the worldwide affiliate program. It was a busy year, as we grew from 350 to 1000 affiliates. I learned a lot about what other affiliates were doing–what worked, and what didn’t work. I also got to share what Dave and I have learned through our experiences, and I’ve tried to help newcomers shorten their learning curve.

Now I get to devote my energy to CrossFit Seattle. I’ve always wanted to run my own business; the best part about this one is that we really do get to help people.
